Arkhe, Where Dinner Comes With Applause

Arkhe is, on paper, exactly the sort of place you want to like.

The food is excellent. Not just good, but properly considered, confident, and very difficult to fault once it arrives in front of you. Everything tastes, well, delicious.

Front of house follows through. Attentive without hovering, friendly without overdoing it. Cameron, our waiter, is particularly good. Calm, switched on, and capable of making the whole thing feel easy, which is not always a given in places this busy.

And then there’s the clapping.

Not incidental. Not occasional. Systematic.

An open kitchen runs along the room, which should be the point. You watch, you take it in, it adds something. That’s the agreement.

Instead, each time a dish is ready, a sharp, cupped-hand clap cuts through everything. Loud, echoing, and very close. Delivered by a woman on the pass who is clearly in charge of that section, and very committed to making sure everyone knows it.

At first, you assume it’s a once-off. Then it happens again. And again. At a certain point you stop trying to follow your own conversation because it keeps being interrupted by what sounds like a small, controlled explosion happening 60 centimetres from your ear.

Other open kitchens don’t do this. They rely on the fact that people can already see what’s going on. There’s no need to punctuate it.

Here, it feels like the kitchen has decided it is not just part of the experience, but the entire experience.

We were seated at the bar, which in hindsight feels less like seating and more like exposure.

By the end, the food is still excellent. The service is still strong. None of that changes.

But you leave with a slightly fractured memory of it. Good food, good service, and the distinct sense that you’ve spent an hour sitting next to someone enthusiastically applauding their own work.

I’d go back.

Just not there.

Arkhe is located in Norwood, South Australia, and is open for lunch and dinner service (hours vary slightly across the week).
